Principal Backend Engineer

About the role

Teya is building a fintech platform that empowers local businesses across Europe. As a Principal Backend Engineer you will own the architecture and delivery of the core services that enable payments, merchant onboarding, transaction processing and operational workflows. You will work at the intersection of engineering excellence and business strategy, ensuring the platform is secure, compliant, highly available and ready to scale with rapid growth.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and evolve cloud‑native, high‑scale systems that power payments and merchant experiences.
• Define and enforce API‑first standards (REST, gRPC) and domain‑driven design across multiple teams.
• Architect event‑driven, Kafka‑based pipelines to enable decoupled, scalable domains.
• Lead the adoption of modern backend practices using Java 17/21, Spring Boot 3, Kotlin and clean architecture.
• Set and maintain standards for availability, performance, fault tolerance and observability.
• Partner with product, data and leadership to translate business priorities into technical strategy.

Required profile

• Proven experience designing and delivering large‑scale, resilient fintech or payments platforms.
• Strong understanding of security, compliance and high‑availability requirements.
• Ability to lead cross‑functional initiatives and mentor engineering teams.
