GNC Engineer - PX4 Flight Tuning

About the role

Redwire Corporation is looking for a Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC) Engineer specialized in PX4 flight control tuning. You will work within the UAV development team to optimise attitude, rate and position controllers for a variety of aircraft types.

Key responsibilities

• Perform advanced PX4 firmware tuning for attitude, rate, and position controllers.
• Conduct flight performance evaluations, analyse log data and implement tuning improvements.
• Develop, refine and validate GNC algorithms for navigation, control and autonomous behaviours.
• Integrate and calibrate sensors such as IMUs, GPS/GNSS, magnetometers, barometers and vision‑based systems.
• Run SITL/HITL simulations to verify tuning and control algorithms before hardware deployment.
• Support flight‑test operations, prepare tuning configurations and troubleshoot in‑flight issues.
• Diagnose anomalies using flight logs and telemetry, applying robust fixes.
• Contribute to PX4 firmware enhancements by modifying or adding modules when required.
• Document tuning processes, control logic, system behaviour and validation results.

Required profile

• 3+ years of hands‑on GNC engineering, UAV flight control or autonomous systems development.
• Extensive experience with PX4 Autopilot, MAVLink, QGroundControl and flight‑log analysis.
• Strong understanding of control theory, aircraft dynamics, sensor fusion and EKF‑based state estimation.
• Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Python and/or C++ for modelling and algorithm development.
• Practical experience tuning multirotor, fixed‑wing or VTOL platforms in operational environments.
• Experience with ROS/ROS2, Gazebo, JMAVSim or AirSim for GNC testing.
• Hands‑on participation in UAV flight tests and iterative system improvement.
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving and documentation skills.
• Good spoken and written English.
• Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, robotics, control systems or a related field.
