About the role
The International Rescue Committee’s Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six‑week program that prepares newly arrived refugee youth to succeed academically. The Academic Lead Teacher – Elementary will lead a self‑contained classroom of 15‑25 students in grades K‑5, delivering daily lessons in writing, literacy and math while using culturally responsive, trauma‑informed and sheltered instruction for multilingual English learners.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in instructional planning sessions, trainings and all program meetings.
- Design and submit culturally responsive, trauma‑informed lesson plans and slide decks for a class of 15‑25 students.
- Administer formative and summative assessments, including pre‑assessments, to inform curriculum design.
- Facilitate a parent conference for each student during the program.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators and families to develop support strategies.
- Maintain evidence of student progress such as work samples and assessment records.
- Supervise students during lunch and ensure a safe classroom environment.
- Incorporate Classroom Culture Lead Teacher(s) and volunteer Peer Mentors into instruction.
- Complete all required reports on time.
Required profile
- Experience teaching elementary‑level students (Grades K‑5).
- Ability to plan differentiated, trauma‑informed instruction for multilingual learners.
- Familiarity with sheltered instructional approaches.
- Capacity to engage with families and conduct parent conferences.
- Willingness to supervise students outside of instructional time (e.g., lunch).
