About the role
The International Rescue Committee seeks a passionate Adult ESL Instructor to deliver free English classes to newly arrived refugees and immigrants. This short‑term position runs from September 1st to January 15th and focuses on everyday English and job‑readiness skills.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare and teach three rigorous, learner‑centered ESL classes per week.
- Allocate time for lesson planning, attendance tracking, and administrative reporting.
- Document student progress to meet funder requirements and follow up with absent learners.
- Assist with intake, registration, referrals, and outreach for new participants.
- Participate in weekly check‑ins with the Adult Education Supervisor and team meetings.
- Complete required professional‑development hours.
- Supervise ESL Assistant Interns and assess language proficiency using Intercambio, Best Plus 3.0, or similar tools.
- Perform additional tasks to support the Adult Education Department as needed.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree (TESOL certificate preferred).
- 3+ years of experience teaching ESL to adult learners from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Excellent verbal and written communication in English.
- Strong organizational and time‑management abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Fluency in English; additional language skills (e.g., Arabic, Farsi, Spanish) are a plus.
Required skills
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience using language assessment tools such as Intercambio and Best Plus 3.0.
